Greenland, Day 15, afternoon

lheringer

For the first time on this trip, we had an unscheduled opportunity to disembark and stretch our legs on land. The expedition head pulled us up to a random spot on the coast of Greenland and said, everybody in the zodiacs. There was a waterfall and a lagoon and fair flat piece of shrubbery that we could, with difficulty, tramp around on. This was puzzling because we’d only had an hour ashore at Ivittuut, well, maybe hour and a half after the muskox had been spotted and everyone scattered. Why didn’t we use the extra time back there, maybe take half an hour to look for the Viking ruins?

We were at this point being followed up the coast by a Danish warship, complete with fly-bys from a military helicopter. Maybe they just wanted to have a conversation with the captain, so we pulled over.

Minotaur on the Moortops

Gavin R Jones

He tries to sink back through the earth,

Through iridescent slips of schist,

To where the rock can douse his eyes,

Quench fire of sight, dull iris light.

The space – which counts the stars as months,

And judges time by shadow falls –

where lives can howl and show their age.

Each tick of sun and moon: a death

Up here, where echoes never start,

He lays down low and feels through peat

The rocks beneath, the subtle heat,

The walls where blood is merged with night.

Unfreed, unbound, and lost beyond:

The air is thin and spiked with sound.

Everything is different

Everything is different

This is one of the most unusual european country with a unique language, derived from arabic and written with latin characters, with fortresses and churches, with traffic on the left side of the road, with a cuisine which, if you’re lucky, bears the italian imprint, with buses painted with all sorts of colours and with the most powerful Catholic Church in the world.
